Democracy, as defined by the U.S.
Democracy in Iraq is a long way away, as the war has brought immense hatred from the Iraqi people towards the U.S., and has separated their ethnic groups even more. Civil Wars are rampant in Iraq and particularly the Baghdad area, and mass protests commencing. For example, 10,000 Iraqis marched on the U.S.-installed governing council in Nasiriyah, just south of Baghdad, demanding that the U.S. appointees resign and that elections be immediately held.[i] Obviously, something went horribly wrong in the execution of the attacks in Iraq, and the post – war planning.
Part of the root of the problems in Iraq lies within the lack of post-war planning by George Bush and his administration. This is one of the crucial factors of Iraq’s unrest. The World Public Opinion Poll stated “Seven out of ten Iraqis overall–including both the Shia majority (74%) and the Sunni minority (91%)–say they want the United States to leave within a year.” The U.S. is obviously creating more tension than before, in terms of the religious ruling of Iraq.[ii]
Now that the U.S. is trying to set up a democracy (representative, of course) under shiite rule, conflicts between the Sunni and Shia have heightened. Because of George Bush’s lack of post-war planning (and/or probably crave for oil) he ignored the fact that Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and the Gulf states — are all American friends, according to the vice president. They are also all governments led by Sunni presidents or king. Yet at the same time, the United States is backing a Shiite government in Iraq that has close and cordial relations with Iran. The U.S. is building an alliance in the Arab world against Shiite Iran. Ayman Shaheen, a Palestinian professor of political science in Gaza says this; “You worked against history, [There’s] never [been] a Shiite government in the Arab world, through 14 centuries. Shiites will never govern in the Arab world. And this is your fatal mistake. That’s why you will pay a big price.”[iii]
And, finally, in order for a functioning democratic society, your society, obviously has to function; otherwise, what’s the point in voting for a newly appointed pro-American politician in which America has, debatably, created many problems for Iraq. For example, in 2006 Residents of Baghdad were receiving just 2.4 hours of electricity this month, compared to an average of 16-24 hours of electricity before the U.S. invasion. The lowest level prior to this month was 3.9 hours/day.[iv] In March 2008 it was reported that, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Iraq’s health care system as “now in worse shape than ever.”[v] So, in order for a society to grow well, and adapt into an American style of representative democracy.
For Iraq to become a representative democracy it needs a functioning society, in which the people of Iraq agree to. It needs a political system that cooperates with the religious needs of its people, and the surrounding countries. And, it needed more post-war planning in order for all of these things to fall together. The U.S. may have brought down a dictator, but what have they brought up out of the rubble.

To What Extent is HAMAS a Terrorist Group?
Some may say HAMAS is a terrorist group, some may say that they are completely justified in their attacks against Israel and the Zionists, and that they are freedom fighters. The definition of terrorism is “The use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims.”, although the UN has not come up with a uniform definition for it. It may be said that HAMAS is a terrorist because of their techniques of rebellion against the Israeli army, but also it may be said that HAMAS is a freedom fighting group.
HAMAS has been criticized world wide for it’s attacks on Israel, and the said ‘fear’ it instills in the Israeli citizens. Hamas has been known to target both the civilians of Israel and its military. Some of their methods of coming about this are very terroristic and violent in that they use Suicide Bombings on Israeli civilian towns, military Rocket attacks on Israel, kidnapping and exchanging Israeli soldiers, and most of all bombings. In fact, over 8,600 by 2009 had been launched from Palestine, and about 22% of these (1,892) were by HAMAS (allegedly). The US, EU, Israel, Canada and Japan recognize HAMAS as a terrorist organization. Feisal Abdul Rauf (the Imam of Masjid al-Farah, a New York City mosque)[1], a Muslim has even stated “I condemn everyone and anyone who commits acts of terrorism. And Hamas has committed acts of terrorism.”
Whereas, on the other hand there is the side that says HAMAS is not a terrorist group, and that they are simply ‘liberators’ or ‘freedom fighters’ of their holy land against the oppressive regime of the Israelis. HAMAS won the clear majority of the elections in 2006, being democratically elected,[2] so it is what the people obviously want (but this may be classified as state terrorism). Any pro-Palestinian will tell you that the Zionists have stolen their land, so HAMAS is righteous in only trying to get it back. The HAMAS Prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh, also says they are against Zionists, not Jews – implying that they are not a terrorist group in that they don’t use intimidation.
In conclusion, it is easy to say HAMAS is a terrorist organization in that it has a lot of the characteristics of what a typical terrorist organization may have (political aims, revenge, freedom, violence, bombs, shootings, kidnappings, threats), and that countries such as the US recognize it as terroristic. But, we musn’t forget it’s aims, and what has been done to Palestine in the past century – and that they simply want the land they had been living in back. Also, if we look at the US for example, and investigate some of its wars (the war on terror) we can also see that the US shares a lot of which HAMAS does in terms of terroristic traits – so who are they to judge HAMAS? Yes HAMAS has a violent approach which can be deemed terroristic in nature, but they also have a noble cause.
